Without timely access to transaction data and clear guidance on next steps, potential fraud can be harder to catch before funds leave the institution. For banks, effective fraud detection depends on more than identifying suspicious activity after a transaction is complete. Technology can help frontline employees recognize potential risks while a transaction is still in progress. **Put Fraud Detection Into the Transaction Workflow** Over-the-counter (OTC) transactions present a distinct challenge because they involve in-person interactions and a range of transaction types. Check fraud, altered items and other suspicious activity may require employees to consider details beyond what is immediately visible. Automated bank fraud detection can evaluate transactions at the point of presentment, combining transaction information and image analysis to identify potential issues. Systems can also monitor cash activity and flag patterns that warrant further review. The goal is to make relevant information available when employees need it, rather than relying entirely on manual checks or investigations after the fact. **Give Frontline Employees Clear Next Steps** Identifying a potential issue is only part of the process. Employees also need to know how to respond without delaying legitimate transactions. Real-time alerts and instructional messages can guide tellers when a transaction requires additional attention. Depending on the situation, technology can support warnings, holds, transaction denials or authorized overrides. This approach allows employees to act on system guidance without needing to serve as fraud analysts themselves. Suspicious transactions can be routed to trained back-office personnel for further investigation and adjudication. **Balance Fraud Controls With Customer Service** Fraud controls also affect the customer experience. Unnecessary holds or false positives can frustrate customers and undermine confidence in their bank. Missing fraudulent activity, meanwhile, can lead to financial losses and damage trust. Automating initial detection and routing exceptions for review can help financial institutions manage both concerns. This is particularly important for bank customer retention, as customers expect their financial institution to protect their funds without creating avoidable friction.
