Why Are Healthcare Information Exchanges Not Meeting Expectations?

The effective sharing of vital patient information is key to informing better decision-making, avoiding costly medical errors and re-admissions, assisting in the nullification of duplicate records and other patient identity issues, improving diagnoses, and decreasing duplication of testing.

While the Healthcare Information Exchange (HIE) offers a great deal of promise to the industry as a methodology to improve the speed, quality, safety and cost of patient care by enabling shared access to patient information between healthcare facilities, whether they are in the same system or not, it is still very difficult for doctors and patients to easily access their healthcare information.

Our own Randy Jones had the opportunity to dive into the issue of information sharing challenges within the healthcare industry -- as well as the benefits of overcoming those challenges -- in For the Record.  In the article, he offers some perspective on how Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) technology can serve as the solution to overcoming these challenges for the industry.
